Living with a host family abroad has many benefits. It helps to have a great, local support system while you experience a new country. You can ask them about cultural norms, and have a stable home to come back to after exploring around. Living with a local family also gives you the chance to experience the culture in an authentic way. You can see what daily routines, traditions, and other parts of what native life look like. Living with people from another culture gives you the opportunity to experience different viewpoints and ways of life. This can help you adopt new traditions in your own life, as well as appreciate native ones you might not have noticed before.
Sharing life with a host family can also give you lifelong friendships. Many of our past Outbackers still have regular contact with their host families. Living with a host family instead of paying for a hotel also helps you earn and save money that you can use towards adventures! You might be surprised at the personal growth you experience as well while you learn to embrace new experiences, handle challenges, and thrive outside your comfort zone.
Babysit During the Week
All Outbackers have a specific, personalized contract with their Host Family. The hours, duties, and expectations are clear so that everyone can be on the same page. With a maximum of 30 hours per week of childcare, you still have plenty of time for yourself and exploring.
Explore on the Weekends
During your free time, you can meet up with other people to discover the incredible treasures of Australia. There are so many things to do and see — from surfing the waves, to hiking near waterfalls, and from trying out new restaurants to cuddling adorable koalas. By staying for a longer period, you get the opportunity to try all the things without being rushed or jetlagged.

We work closely with our local Australian partners to ensure that families are safe, screened, and friendly so you can feel at home. If the family has hosted before, you’ll have the chance to speak with their past Outbacker as well.

We strive to work with families in locations that make sense. Living near public transportation can change everything. One of our goals is to help our Outbackers be well-connected, both to travel around and to meet friends.
Group Chat & Social Circles
Before your adventure even begins, you’ll be added to our program group chat. We also put you in touch with other young adults from various programs so that you can start making friendships long before you arrive.
Real Earnings
We ensure that your weekly pay of is clear and consistent. Before you arrive, we help you set up your free Australian bank account so you can access your money right when you get there. Your host family will transfer money into your account on a weekly basis.
The money you earn — plus having living expenses covered — means you have an opportunity to live it up in a unique way in the Land Down Under.
On-the-Ground Support
Some travel companies cash in and get out. Their mindset is: once you’ve arrived, you’re on your own. Not us! We’re here to support and answer questions even after you arrive. Plus our partners live in Australia and can step in as needed. We also have regular check ins to make sure your contract is upheld by all parties involved.
